 Equator Village Gan Island   +

Gan Island
Addoo Atoll (Seenu), Maldives

When you have been to the Maldives before, forget everything about the Maldives. When you chose to visit the Addu Atoll you will see, it is totally different from everything you experienced before.

Before reaching the Addu Atoll and Gan you will have a flight from Male to Gan and that is something you will never forget. You will see all kinds of beautiful atolls, islands and of course the blue ocean beneath you passing by.

Before landing on Gan you will see that it is a large island, at least compared to the “normal” Maldivan islands. With its length of 5 km and width of 3 km it is a real island. And what is more the Addu Atoll is even south of the equator. That’s probably the resort is called Equator Island.

As said, Gan is one of the four larger islands in the Addu Atoll. And once you visit one these islands, you will be amazed. All the islands are connected by bridges. As the islands are so large, there live about 25000 Maldivians on the island. So you have an excellent opportunity to meet the “local” people. Please do try to make several excursions. In this way you will get a good impression of the way of life of the Maldivians.

Gan Island was a base of the Royal Air of Britain until March 1976. The British troops were present during the second World War on the island of Gan. There is war memorial that was built by the British on the Island of Gan. Gan is connected to other Villages in western lagoon of the atoll by causeways. The length of all these islands is about 18 kilometers. On Maradhoo (Inhabited Island ) there is still the building used as a Armory by the British forces during second World War.

The British cargo ship (British loyalty) that was Torpedoes by the Japanese in World war two is lying on the sea bed inside the atoll at Maradhoo Island. This is one of the best wreck diving point in the Maldives. As Equator Village Gan Island is the only tourist hotel in Addu atoll, the diving points and the marine life is till unspoilt and this area is considered as one of the best dive area in the Maldives.

As Gan Island is connected to other villages by causeways tourists can freely move to see the local culture and way of life of the Maldivian people. Equator Village- Gan offers bicycle for those who wish to ride and explore the islands on their own. There is lush tropical vegetation on Gan Island and other neighboring islands. There is a long white sandy beach just 100 meters from the hotel for the guest to enjoy the coral and other marine life is ideal for snorkeling.
